How digital products work
How Foxy digital products are set up, delivered to customers, and how they differ from standard products.
This article covers how digital products work in Foxy — from how they’re created and added to the cart, to how customers receive and download their files.
How digital products are different
Unlike standard Foxy products, digital products must be created explicitly in the Foxy admin before they can be sold. Each product requires a name, a unique product code, and a price — these are set in the admin, not in the add-to-cart link.
A few important differences to be aware of:
Price is set in the admin. The
priceparameter in your add-to-cart link is ignored for digital products, unless your store has product verification enabled and the price is not zero.Product name is set in the admin. You don’t need to pass a
nameparameter in your add-to-cart link, though including one won’t cause an error.A product code is required. Every digital product must have a unique code within its category.
A compatible product category is required. The product’s category must have its delivery option set to “Downloaded by the customer”. See Set up a product category for digital products for details.
How delivery works
A digital product is added to the cart like any other product. After a successful transaction, download links appear on the web receipt and in the email receipt. The customer clicks a link and their download begins immediately, though their browser may prompt them to choose a save location depending on their settings.
Limitations
Maximum file size is 250MB per product.
One file per product. If you need to deliver multiple files as one product, zip them together first.
Product-level discounts are not supported. Use category-level discounts or coupons instead.
Digital products are not recommended for use with subscriptions. See Digital products and subscriptions for more detail.
Notes
Filenames should only use alphanumeric characters. Avoid special characters such as
?to prevent download issues.Digital products added to the cart without a valid category and code will either error or be added as a standard (non-digital) product.
