Product Categories Overview
What product categories control — grouping products to set shared taxes, shipping, discounts, and receipt emails without configuring each one individually.
Product categories give products additional behaviors that can’t be set with product options alone. You manage them under Categories in the Foxy admin.
What categories control
Email receipts. Email receipts can be generated per category, with different emails for customers and admins — useful when one transaction mixes very different products, like conference registrations and books. See Send category specific email receipts.
Default weight values. Set a default weight per category — for example 0.5 for shirts and 3 for paperweights — so you don’t have to enter it on every product. Explicitly setting a product’s weight overrides the default.
Taxes. Taxes are set at the category level, so different products can be taxed differently.
Shipping and handling fees. Categories can set specific handling fees as well as shipping methods.
Customs values. Customs values used in shipping calculations can only be set at the category level.
Quantity discounts. Quantity discounts can apply to all products in the cart within a given category. See Set up a category discount.
Coupon codes. Coupons can be restricted to specific categories; that restriction is set on the coupon, not the category. See Coupons and discounts overview.
Downloadables. Downloadable products must sit in a category whose shipping method is set to downloaded by the customer. See How digital products work.
Notes
Changing a category’s settings affects every product in that category.
Where a behavior can be set in both places, the product-level value wins — for example, an explicit product weight overrides the category default.
